SOME EXCEPTIONS IN THIS REGARD VERSE NO.55

      Some could have misunderstanding with the previous verse that it may include all men to have communications with the prophet's wives from behind a curtain, even their fathers and brothers. So the above verse revealed to exclude a group of close relatives:-

      ``There is no fault with them if they encounter without veil with their fathers, sons, brothers....''

      In fact this verse is a complementary to the covering (HEJÄB) clause, of the previous verse (NO.53). Here a list has been given of six groups of men, before whom the prophet wives could appear informally, and without a veil.

      Although six groups of men are mentioned here in this verse, the expounders of Qurän, also include the paternal and maternal uncles, who are to be added to the list.

      They reason that when the son of your brother is ``MAHRAM'' to you, she too is MAHRAM to her brother's son. She is called the aunt, and so will be the case with uncle.

      The Arabic, ``MAHRAM'' has not an equivalent word in English, for being a religious Islamic term for the close relatives with whom marriage has been prohibited, eg.:-

      One's son, daughter, sister, and brother.

      In the above verse, (NO.55), by, ``THEIR WOMEN'' the believing Moslem women are meant, who may intimately associate with them, and by, ``WHAT THEIR RIGHT HANDS OWN'' might mean slaves or servants.

      Then the ending of the verse changes from the third person, to an imperative mood:-

      ``Beware of Allah, that Allah witnesses everything.''

      This may imply that all such veils and coverings, are no more than some protecting means and instruments. What is the most important is the piety and virtue. You have to beware of Allah, and have an awe for Him, in the depth of your heart; or else such preventing means and tools, will not do when they have to do as they should.
