PART OF THE STORY OF HOOD

VERSE NO. 65- 72

Following the story of Noah, his Ark, and the Flood; we come down to some four generations later to the tribe of Aad, who lived in the land of Yemen. They were a people strong, wealthy expert in construction. They were idolaters, weak in morality and full of mischief and evil deeds.

(Allameh, Abdullah Yusuf Ali has the following comments about the people of Aad in his valuable commentary of Qurجn:

``The Aad people with their prophet Hood are mentioned in many places; see especially S 26: 123-140 and S 46: 21-26.

Their story belongs to Arabian tradition. Their ancestor whose name was Aad was fourth in generation from Noah, having been a son from Aus, the son of Aram, the son of Sam, the son of Noah. They occupied a large tract of country in Southern Arabia, extending from Umman at the mouth of Persian Gulf to Hadhramaut and Yemen, at the Southern end of the Red Sea.

The people were tall in statue and were great builders. Probably the long tract of sands (ahqaf) in their dominion were irrigated with canals. They forsook the true God, and oppressed their people. A three years famine afflicted them, but they still took no warning. At length a terrible blast of wind destroyed them and their land, but a remnant known as the second Aad or Thamud, were saved, and afterwards suffered a similar fate for their sins.

The tomb of prophet hood is still traditionally known in Hadhramaut in latitude 16ْN, and longitude 79.1.2.ْ E, about 90 miles north of Mukalla. There are ruins and inscriptions in the neighbourhood. There is an annual pilgrimage to it, in the month of RAJAB.

See, ``HADHRAMAUT, SOME OF ITS MYSTERIES UNVEILED'' By: Dr. van der Maulen. and H. van Wissman, legden 1932.''   TRANSLATOR'S NOTE)

The prophet Hood, like a compassionate brother began to preach and admonish his people. He asked them to renounce their idols, and worship the only one and true God who created them all, and gave them whatever they had.

He admonished them to leave their evil deeds and mischiefs and amend their behaviour. He seriously told them that there will be a Resurrection Day and a Final Judgement through God's justice, and warned his people of the chastisement of a Day awfully great.

But the chieftains among the unbelievers of his tribe accused the Messenger of God of folly and weakness of mind! He insisted upon his assertion that he was the Messenger of God, and had come to guide them to the path of truth and prosperity and salvation; but they rejected him and disbelieved! They exclamied in protest that you call us to leave so many gods that we have them from old and worship the only one God who is your Lord!?

And the prophet in despair of guiding them, finally said: ``Abomination and wrath from your Lord has fallen upon you. Do you dispute with me about some names void of meanings that you and your fathers have invented?! When admonitions and advices failed to be of any use; God's wrath and punishment seized them, and Hood and his followers were saved, while the rest were overthrown and destroyed, and the trail of the unbelivers were cut off.
