Imam ÝAlÐ (Ýa): The First to Believe in the Prophet (Ò) and to Confirm His Message
Which individual is the verse: (وَ الَّذِی جاءَ بِالصِّدْقِ وَ صَدَّقَ بِهِ) referring to?
A great number of Muslim commentators, both Shia and Sunni, have narrated the following tradition in regards to the Quranic verse «وَ الَّذِی جاءَ بِالصِّدْقِ وَ صَدَّقَ بِهِ», which mentions how the term «الَّذِی جاءَ بِالصِّدْقِ» is referring to the Prophet (Ò), while the term «صَدَّقَ بِهِ» is referring to Imam ÝAlÐ (Ýa). The famous Islamic commentators ÓabarsÐ and AbÙ al-FutÙÎ RÁzÐ (in their respective works MajmaÝ al-BayÁn and RÙh al-JanÁn) have narrated these traditions from the Imams of the Ahl al-Bayt (Ýa). At the same time, a group of the scholars and commentators of the Ahl al-Sunnah have narrated these traditions from AbÙ Hurayrah or from other sources such as ÝAllÁmah Ibn MaghÁzilÐ in his ManÁqib, ÝAllÁmah GanjÐ in his KifÁyahÞ al-ÓÁlib, QurÔubÐ in his famous commentary, ÝAllÁmah SuyÙÔÐ in his Durr al-ManthÙr, as well as ÀlÙsÐ in his RÙh al-MaÝÁnÐ.
Such commentaries are designed to show the truth and no one can deny the truth that Imam ÝAlÐ (Ýa) was the first person to believe in the Prophet (Ò). The only issue that some people have taken is that they say that when Imam ÝAlÐ (Ýa) became a Muslim, he was only 10-12 years in age and therefore, his faith was not ‘official’. Yet how can this be true when the Prophet (Ò) accepted his Islam and appointed him as his vizier and successor. The Prophet (Ò) also repeatedly mentioned that he was the ‘first of the pious believers’ and the ‘first to accept Islam’.
